Artist Bio
I am artist educator, Caryn A. Blum. I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, graduated from Pius XI High School of Milwaukee, earned my B.F.A. in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and my MA. in Education from Seton Hall University. I have exhibited my Fine Art mixed media paintings, Illustration, 3D sculptural mixed media art, stop-motion animation, collages and clay works nationwide from 2000 to 2026. I first exhibited my paintings at the Milwaukee Art Museum from 2000-2003 as a Scholastic Pentad award college scholarship and Gold Key award winner. My art has been exhibited in galleries such as Mass MOCA, Blue Ridge Mountain Gallery of Chelsea, NYC, PJ’s Gallery of Wauwatosa, WI, Virginia Arts Center of Richmond, The Woods Gerry Gallery of RISD in Providence, RI, Kohler Art Center, Kohler, WI, Anderson Arts Center of Indiana. Pont Aven School of Art and Gallery of Pont Aven, France, Baton Rouge Arts Center, and the Miller Art Museum of Sturgeon Bay, WI. I was most recently awarded a finalist in the Door County, WI, Art in the Door, 2025 artist competition.
In addition to showing my art, have worked from 2007 to 2026 as a Visual Art educator, and substitute teacher with a master’s degree in education and dual certification in NJ and WI for PK-12th Art. I teach in regular PK-12 schools, as well as in galleries, and alternative venues as a tutor and arts instructor. I have published children’s books and education based content for families in art education since 2008, and I continue to seek means of developing art curriculum, and works of art that celebrate nature, real fine arts, and a love of positive and family friendly conceptual work in Visual Arts communities.
Over the trajectory of my career of over twenty years; I include my formative years as an advanced placement Visual Artist and Fine Arts Painting/ Illustration major in my A.P. (Advanced Placement) college-preparatory high school because I believe whole-heartedly in upholding the intent of artists and young people. My intent as an artist, and young professional has always and only been in the support of using my hand-made and diverse Visual Art skills and education for goodness. I have worked from age 15 to age 41 now only creating visual art objects (paintings, drawings, small sculpted works, sketchbooks, illustrated books and stop-motion animations) as my art. This includes the in-person Fine Art gallery exhibition of my Gold-Key and National Pentad Fine Art Award scholarship portfolio, which was completed, copyrighted and sold to private owners prior to 2003. This also includes my Scholastic scholarship exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and The Haggerty Museum of Art, as well as the Corcoran Museum of Art. I write about this because my entire life has been dedicated to the study, creation, exhibition, and education of Visual Fine Arts, Illustration and Visual Art Education. I earned a B.F.A in Visual Art, as well as a Master’s degree in Education, and I work as a certified Visual Art teacher and substitute teacher in addition to the exhibition and sales of my Visual Art objects. I would never participate in work that went against the freedom, autonomy, safety, and protection of family-friendly values, my identity as a straight, Christian woman, or the Christian moral values and art that I choose to represent me, or my work and life. I have always been the same girl who believes in my own right to choose my own artistic and spiritual purpose in this one precious life. I was born a girl; and I believe my one life is mine to take care of. I will always be the same person, a woman who only agrees to participate in authentic, positive, safe and family-friendly themes that support my beliefs as a Christian woman. I am a strong supporter of the rights of artists, education and the protection of children. Every school I attended and workplace institution I was employed with has always known my identity is a Confirmed Christian woman, with strong morals, and over 20 years of a career making paintings, drawings, illustrations, and sculptures as my art.
I have also worked as an artist educator from age 15 to 41, only supporting age-appropriate Visual Art object making classes and content my entire career. This distinction is my right, though my education, degrees and work as an American Visual Artist Educator. I am the sole owner of my artistic and educational professional identity. This statement is crucial because I would never support the destruction of authentic and true artistic autonomy, and American rights of artists and educational institutions. Autonomy means that 100% of the efforts, definition, and use of work and efforts goes towards the intended cause and goal. No one has the right to utilize my life, work, identity, or self in any capacity unless I have approved this. I am a Christian woman, and have always been proud of the woman I am, who God made me to be naturally. The intent and purpose of my life, work, and actions are 100% only in service of being a teacher of children, and an artist who makes visual art objects as defined clearly above. I have documented all the years of my life, the support of my schools, workplaces and family of the pursuit of these American rights; and the talent, education and well earned career. Anyone who supports American artists right to choose the art they create, and the ways they put work into the world can empathize with the fact that the artist, chooses what art they create. I choose that my original art objects of paintings, drawings, books, stop-motion animations, illustrations, and sculptures are my art. No one has the right to use my art, me, my body, my life, teaching lessons, ideas, workplaces, likeness, voice, writing or life story in any content without my permission. This is my right as a Christian American woman artist.
My values and morals as a Christian woman educator include my support only of work and intent that supports natural life, peace, safety and individual positive American rights to identity, freedom to pursue one’s own life work and happiness. I love working as both a visual artist and an educator of young people. I have a ton of knowledge and expertise in a wide variety of artistic processes, visual art mediums, contemporary conceptual art and art history. I work to continue my career as both artist and educator in ways that support me, and promote peaceful coexistence as an American artist professional in a complex intellectual and social global and local community.
